Introducing Rhapsody on the iPhone

Every day I watch Twitter to see what people are talking about with regards to our brands. I see lots of suggestions and lots of feedback, but the one thing that keeps on coming is this question: When will Rhapsody be on the iPhone? Or, when will Rhapsody be on Android? Well, we FINALLY have an answer: hopefully, very soon!.
This week Rhapsody will submit our on-demand streaming music application for the iPhone and iPod Touch to Apple for review. Why is this so cool? Well, if you’re a Rhapsody subscriber you already understand the benefits of an on-demand music service. But, until now, nothing exists like this here in the states. There is nothing quite as satisfying as needing to hear a certain song RIGHT NOW and being able to scratch that itch. That’s what we aim to do, and now it’ll be easier than ever. I can’t even count the number of times I’ve wanted to hear a song on my iPhone and guiltily plopped down $.99 to iTunes to please my impatient self. When I first used the Rhapsody app it seriously felt like the sun shone a little brighter that day. Music matters that much.
And the functionality? It’s easy. Intuitive. You’ll see a menu bar across the bottom of the screen, as is found in many apps. You’ll have the option to check out the queue, your library, browse the Rhapsody library (ahem, all 8 million + songs of it), search, and settings. The app has all the functionality of the client, or Rhapsody.com, only super portable. To get a better idea of what the app can do for you, check out this vid.
We know not everyone who uses an iPhone is a Rhapsody subscriber, but we think the app will appeal to anyone who has an affinity for music. Subscribers can just log in to the app with their existing user name and password and the experience will be seamless. Non-subscribers will have the opportunity to try the app for a limited time free-trial period.
We are working diligently on an Android app and once we’re done there, we plan to turn our sights on more mobile platform and carrier app stores. In the mean time, start getting your playlists ready in Rhapsody and Rhapsody.com. Music is about to get a whole lot better.

I’m thrilled that Rhapsody may finally be getting the exposure that it deserves. There’s always room for more music services and this means not limiting people to just iTunes. Looking forward to it! Thanks for the heads up Lacy!

As a Rhapsody to-go subscriber with a Sansa that no longer syncs AND an iPhone, I *really* appreciate this news! The demo looks very nice too, I am excited to be able to get this app and start using it.
I’m also glad to see this app is (mostly) following iPhone interface guidelines / user experience. Rhapsody sometimes gets into trouble with non-standard interface.

With 2 kids, a husband and myself, downloading at .99 cents a pop gets expensive. A flat fee of $14.95 saves me so much money. Now that it is available on iPhone I have options for my phone. I will now be able to get my kids the iPod touch like they have been asking for and be able to load it with music right away.

Lame. RR should have cranked out a FREE free version for non-subs to get them hooked. Limited time demo stylee or at least something to let people outside the Real Wall get a taste for it.
Freemium might not be ‘the future’ but it works very well in these kinds of cases…
For a company this big to pass up such a huge opportunity to add to it’s subscriber base seems like a huge waste of development time as well as marketing dollars. You’re already losing money… bold moves win the day.
Rhapsody isn’t a bad service.. but it IS overpriced and extremely meek when it comes to competing in their chosen space. Lots o’ luck to ya Quirkmeister

This is long overdue.
This should have been available via the web browser long ago for the iphone.
For existing and LOYAL customers there should not be an additional fee, the fact that REAL has not been able to get their service to work on mobile devices for YEARS now is a limit of theirs to think now that they have FINALLY and POSSIBLY overcome this limit they wish to charge a 100% premium for the previlage of having to wait for them to catch up!
Becareful you may get what you wish which is careful consideration of the actual value of your service and the inability of a company to move forward in a timely fashion as the technology landscapes change and then to charge existing paying customers a premium for it…
We certainly will end our subscription if this in fact becomes the case!

[...] Original: Finally. RealNetworks’ has launched is Rhapsody music service on iPhone tonight. The app is free, but it is a paid service, at $14.99-a-month Rhapsody To Go service. Like its online version, on demand streaming for every song, unlike some of the free services on iPhone like Pandora and Slacker. Says it has 8 million songs. Online subscribers won’t have to pay extra for the app. Next up, an Android app. Because of the price, very likely the major users would be the existing online subscribers; iPhone users, already saddled with hefty monthly bills, will surely balk at adding another $15 a month. More here. [...]

I hope Android is one of the other platforms they’re working on. I’m surprised they’re putting so much effort into the iPod where they can bet on a fight with Apple. it would have been nice to see Rhapsody tip their hat to an open platform such as Android instead of the nazis at AT&T and Apple.
I will probably upgrade my Rhapsody account as soon as I’m able to use it on my G1.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:46 am
@S J A, as you can see in the last paragraph, Android is also a platform we’re working on.
August 24th, 2009 at 9:57 am
I’d like to submit a vote for a Pre version. Playing any song I want on-demand is a big deal for me
August 24th, 2009 at 9:59 am
This is streaming-only, right? You won’t be able to download or play Rhapsody content off-line (Apple will never allow that). If so why would you need Rhapsody-to-go, wouldn’t Rhapsody Unlimited be enough? Isn’t it just like signing in to the web version of Rhapsody? Without ability to download, you couldn’t use it in the subway, in a car, etc, unless you had a pristine connection, either 3G or wifi.

FINALLY!! Let’s see if Apple can find a way to make me hate them by rejecting this application. Rhapsody is the only missing piece in an otherwise great device. The Sirius XM app was 1/2 the puzzle and now this.
Steve, please, please PLEASE approve this. It won’t hurt your business because the whole point of Rhapsody is you subscribe to music not buy it, and Rhapsody uses just don’t buy songs off iTunes. You can’t force them to, they plain won’t. Instead they choose another device, like the fantastic SquezeBox to listen to Rhapsody.
Rhapsody customers don’t buy from iTunes, Amazon or anywhere else. Bring them to your platform. It’s new business.

This is very good news. I have been waiting for the ability to stream my music for a very long time. However, if you are going to this please make sure its done right.
Please allow multi task while steaming music. Otherwise I will keep using Simplify and Lastfm for free. Also, please allow to search music by year. Sometimes I feel like listening to an era but can’t really think of all the songs that came out that year. Other than that the Demo looks great. Thanks Rhapsody and keep on Rocking.

Hurrayy!!
Why would a Real employee plunk down $0.99 to Apple to hear a song when they need it instead of using Rhapsody? Doesn’t seem like a truthful statement, but rather a suggested use case.
August 24th, 2009 at 6:25 pm
@dmccall actually I do buy songs from iTunes quite regularly. Like I said in the post, it’s the instant gratification thing.
August 24th, 2009 at 6:52 pm
I think it’s a poor idea to announce this before it has been approved — all you’re doing is promoting vaporware at this point. Unless your purpose was to create a publicity stunt out of the rejection I expect you’ll receive from Apple.
Good developers under-promise and over-deliver. You’re already off to a bad start.

While this is good news (assuming Apple approves it), streaming only (like the Nokia N810 version) is not going to satisfy people. Offline storage and playback (ala “To Go”) is absolutely necessary for people like me who are lucky to catch an Edge network where they live. Whatever subscription service offers that on my iPhone will get my money.

Yeah! It’s here! The magic jukebox in the sky!
Except it’s not working for me. Signs in, but can’t search artists, can’t access my library. What a disappointing out-of-the-box experience.
Sadly, Rhapsody’s history of semi-functional software seems to have followed them to the iPhone.
I love the idea of Rhapsody and have been using it for probably 6-7 years because it’s got the most music. If anyone comes along and offers the same catalog and a better implementation (Spotify?), I’ll switch in a second and never look back.
September 10th, 2009 at 8:36 am
I have been waiting and as I feared it does NOT work.
I have a streaming only subscription. I downloaded the iphone app. Logged into my rhapsody account and was prompted with a free 7 day trial.
I accepted and now everytime I try to log into the Rhapsody iPhone app I am prompted for the free trial again, even though I have accepted it!
I cannot get to the app.
Horrible first experience!

Rhapsody Unlimited Users – To EXCLUDE LOYAL Unlimited users and only support rhapsody to go users only continually pushes us from the service.
We are at the point in which we are considering if we purchase 10 songs per month to warrant a subscription…
Most likely not, in other words we cancel the Rhapsody subscription and simply purchase music when we want and most likely that will be less than the current and ongoing subscription rate paid YEAR after YEAR to Real Networks.
To only allow Rhapsody To Go subscriptions to work when the Rhapsody Unlimited subscription DOES work when logged into a website (which does not work on the iphone’s web browser) only penalizes those loyal customers….
REAL NETWORKS – allow your customers to use your products so that there is some value and relevance to your offerings.
We will give you 30 days but if after that the policies remain the same you will lose yet another customer.
Can you really afford the attrition rates your are enjoying?
Also, offline caching a must… seems so obvious.

September 10th, 2009 at 2:21 pm
@John
Unfortunately, we are bound by our label agreements to require a Rhapsody To Go subscription with the app. The labels view both the iPhone and iPod as portable devices, whether offline playback is in place or not.
And about that offline playback – yep, we think it is important too and we’re working on it. And while we would have loved to have it ready for this first iteration of the app, it isn’t. However, we feel like the current app is pretty compelling and didn’t want to keep our customers waiting.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:33 pm
@Lacy
It would see then that a web app would also be in place to mimic the Rhapsody Unlimited functionality that exists with this current subscription level through the browser interface (Safari).
Ultimately the problem is that we will not pay two subscription fees for the same service just so that a particular piece of hardware can use the service… Imagine if EVERY piece of hardware had to have a separate subscription obviously no one would purchase the service.
So somehow the “merging” of unlimited and to go or an option add to unlimited needs to occur but certainly we wont pay two subscription fees but we will penalize Real for not resolving….
Hopefully, REAL will be able to overcome these deficiencies.
September 10th, 2009 at 3:50 pm
@John, Again, it’s a matter of portability. Even if we had a web app that worked on the iPhone it would be the same problem. You don’t need to pay for 2 subscriptions, just the To-Go. I’m sorry that we couldn’t extend it to Unlimited users.
September 10th, 2009 at 9:18 pm
Hi, Didn’t realize that To-Go actually was MORE functional than unlmited… you might want to look at your plan “names” so that things are more obvious.
In addition, you may wish to offer discounts for quarter or annual subscription services in order to create an incentive…
Ultimately you are going to run into the problem of does the average person purchase more than 15 songs per month anything less creates a value issue proposition…

I really like the idea of this app but in version 1.0 it just doesn’t deliver.
Where I live only Edge is available. This application does not work on Edge. On an edge connection browsing radio stations doesn’t work. Browsing top albums doesn’t work. Searching for artists doesn’t work. If you happen to have music in your queue, music playback seems to work pretty well.
The other problem with the application is that even on a wifi network there are frequent application lock-ups and crashes back to the launcher.
These problems and more are being discussed at the Rhapsody forums.
http://real.lithium.com/real/board?board.id=InstallingRhapsody
I am really hoping that the problems can be resolved in a future version.
September 12th, 2009 at 2:59 am
I have been a loyal Rhapsody-To-Go subscriber for years and I am thrilled with the app! After watching the little video tutorial I got the most out of it. Does everything it says it does. The edge is a bit spotty, but the WiFi is excellent. The only con I have is that we can’t listen offline (yet?). Good job!
September 15th, 2009 at 6:55 am
Mine is working now on the iPhone. It didn’t work over 3G on my original phone but when I upgraded to a 3GS last week, it started working over 3G. Good app, but I’m now disappointed by the low bitrates. I can even notice the tinny sound on my otherwise crappy car stereo.
On the plus side, it was incentive to figure out how to jailbreak my phone, which I did. I can now run Rhapsody in the background.
If Real upgrades the bitrate, I stay. ($15/month is much less than I used to spend on CDs) If Spotify beats them to the US and has a better bitrate for the same-ish $, I go.
September 15th, 2009 at 7:12 am
@Jason- that is great that it’s working. W/r/t sound quality- we are trying to address this in a future release. Stay tuned please!

Currently it’s 64kbps, but we’re in the process of upgrading.
September 30th, 2009 at 1:25 pm

October 1st, 2009 at 5:59 pm
Great Job guys. Can’t wait for next version but enjoying all that you have so far!!
October 7th, 2009 at 5:43 am
I installed the app on my iPhone, logged in and the application has only worked ONCE! It will open, but my search function will not work. The music I have queued only streams for a few seconds before stopping.
This is day 3 or 4 of my “free” trial which is going to waste as we speak. As it is, I already pay $12.99/month for the regular subscription.
I have absolutely no idea how to resolve the issue. And yes, my iPhone has the latest software. I already reset the network settings, but that did not work.
So far, I’m very disappointed.
October 18th, 2009 at 10:48 am
We are easily downloading free mp3 and and many more. Is it not possible to download the software the same way…free?

So now the application doesn’t work AT ALL over 3G (and it crashed repeatedly before when it was barely working over 3G before).
The hundredth example of buggy, poor quality, development from Real. Maybe I’m the idiot for still being a subscriber. My patience has just about run out.
