She’s No Monster…

In my last post I wrote about Film.com and some of the more popular destinations on the site. Today I’m excited to expound on that topic. I got to interview Sasha Pasulka (Pa-sol-ka) who writes the wickedly-fun Evil Beet celebrity gossip blog as well as her personal blog, Sasha is a Monster.

What, you’re not into gossip blogs? You don’t care about what car Lindsay crashed, or if Britney is completely freaking bonkers? Riiiight. Ok, so let’s say you really, truly aren’t into that kind of thing, Sasha’s blog is still worth reading. She’s hilarious. She’s smart. And she says everything that we want to- but don’t. You can’t help but feel a little bit jealous.

Sasha studied at Arizona State University and received her undergrad degree in computer science. She received her graduate degree from UCLA and went on to work in aerospace. She thought that was her plan in life. Then, one day she went on vacation and when she came home there was a note from her live-in boyfriend that he was dumping her. Classy, right?  ”I had a lot of venom and a lot of time to kill,” she said. “I decided to start my own gossip blog. It was an outlet for me to be a venomous bitch and not take it out on friends or family.” Funny (for us, anyways) how a break up can launch a career.

So, while she was blogging working for her super high-profile employer, people began to take notice of her pessimistic sense of humor on Evil Beet. Sasha was introduced to Film.com through a friend and began doing gossip pieces for them in fall of 2006. But she was offered a job for at a competitor and told Film.com she would be unable to continue writing for them. Film.com realized that a little bit of harmless sass was just what the doctor ordered and she was given a better offer and hired to write full time.

She packed her bags and moved to the famously dreary city of Seattle to make Evil Beet thrive. After all, what better way to get in a bad mood than to wake up to gray skies for six months straight? Regardless of that, she loves her job, and she knows she’s lucky. She loves writing about Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears. “Lindsay- I just love her. She’s someone that everyone relates to. We’ve seen her grow up. America has a soft spot for that girl.” And what about someone she doesn’t like? After all, Sasha’s writing was originally based on anger and a good bit of it is pretty snide. “Paris. I can’t stand Paris. She’s unwilling to let herself be vulnerable. Any time you see Paris act vulnerable, it’s obvious it’s such an act, Paris refuses to be human,” she said, somewhat repulsed.

Asked if she didn’t cover anyone on purpose, she answered, “Kim Kardashian.” Why? “She’s famous because people like me make her famous,” she said. Point taken. So is it all fun and games reporting on the lives of the uber famous? Not exactly. “I get cease and desist letters pretty frequently. You have to make a judgment call on how serious they are. One time I published a rumor that Ashley Simpson was cheating on Pete Wentz. They sent a C&D letter over and I didn’t pull it. They didn’t have a case.” Smart and willing to pick a fight, if necessary. There’s also a disconnect on what commenters deem acceptable and what they don’t. “It’s true,” she said. “Whenever I call someone a slut or a druggie, people are so quick to agree. But the moment I point out that someone needs to lose weight, they become completely defensive and completely freak out.”

But as much as her readers may get upset over some of what she says, they can’t seem to leave. She’s getting a ton of traffic and helping Film.com become a quiet success story. She represents a culture at Real that people may not know exists. “I don’t think people realize what a young company Real is, and what a fun work environment it is,” she said. “I think there is this impression that they haven’t hired anyone since RealPlayer, and that’s just not how it is at all.”  And as for her future here, Sasha is looking forward to where Film.com is going. “They’re looking to bring in a young audience who looks to RealNetworks to compose original content as opposed to just software. In that regard, gossip blogging brings a huge content audience- nationally and globally,” she said.

One thing is for certain. The Evil Beet is entertainment, and that’s what we’re here to provide. So, even if you’ve never been a fan of celeb gossip, I’d recommend you check out her site. It’s got wit to spare, and couldn’t we all use a bit of that these days?
