Let Me Introduce You to Film.com

RealNetworks is a company that has so many things going on, sometimes it’s hard to keep everything straight. We are an entertainment company. We focus on music, games, ringtones and video because they are entertainment. One of my favorite things that we do is something you may not have even heard about; Film.com.  Film.com IS everything entertainment.

At first glance, you’d probably assume that Film.com is all about movies. It definitely has a lot to do with movies, but it also encompasses television, music, fashion, and celebrity gossip. It’s also about community and social networking. Yes, I’m aware that those two terms are grossly overused in our Web 2.0 era. Film.com aspires to be a place where people who have the celebrity-obsession skeleton can come share thier love or total distaste for all things Hollywood.

Does this sound cliched? Maybe. But, have you seen how ravenous people can get about Britney Spears and her shaved head or who got snubbed at the Oscars? I find it all pretty fascinating. Film.com does too, and they think you’ll like what they’ve got going on in their little world. So, I sat down with Mike McMurray, GM of product management, and chatted with him about Film.com. Mike envisions a Film.com full of users chatting with each other about the latest episode of Heroes. He said the site is not intended to be an authoritative voice, but rather a way to get a conversation started among entertainment fans. “What makes us special,” he said, “is marrying editorial content and social networking.”

What kind of editorial content? Well, Film.com has a lot of different writers focusing on a lot of different things. McMurray said the sites that have gained the most traction are The Big Hitter (a movie site), What2Watch Daily (a TV site), and the Evil Beet (hands down the best celebrity gossip blogger out there. And I’ve read a lot, I’m not ashamed to admit). What’s missing from the puzzle? More users to give their feedback, to help keep the conversations rolling. Film.com’s writers want you to be engaged so they write about topics that they think you’ll want to discuss. So, what are you waiting for?
